Intelect’s management group has extensive medical device experience with neuromodulation and cardiovascular device companies.
Vincent Owens – Mr. Owens joined Intelect Medical as co-founder, President and CEO in 2005, bringing with him 20 years of medical device industry experience. Prior to joining Intelect, Mr. Owens was President and CEO at Texcel Medical, an implantable CRMD and neuromodulation device company. Previously, Mr. Owens was founding CEO of Biomec Cardiovascular (BCI), a Minneapolis-based developer of proprietary implantable stimulation leads and lead delivery systems for the neuromodulation and CRMD markets. He led BCI to profitability and acquisition by publicly-traded Enpath Medical (NASDAQ:NPTH) in 2003, after which he became Enpath’s President, Lead Technologies. Mr. Owens was a founding employee of Biomec Inc. in Cleveland in 1998, and served in various capacities including President & CEO and board member until Biomec’s acquisition by Greatbatch (NYSE:GB) in 2007. Earlier in his career, Mr. Owens held various engineering and management roles at Ciba Corning Diagnostics (now Siemens) and Circon ACMI (now Olympus). Mr. Owens serves on the boards of several privately held medical device companies and he is an industry advisor on Cornell University’s CCTEC and Case Western’s CCTRP. Mr. Owens earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and an MBA from Ashland University.
Steve LaPorte – Mr. LaPorte has had a long and distinguished career in the medical device industry including 27 years at Medtronic, including more than a decade as vice president and general manager of multiple divisions, including electrophysiology systems, drug delivery, and, most recently, Neuroventures. In these roles, he had extensive general operational and management experience as well as broad strategic planning and execution duties. LaPorte holds a BS in Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point, and an MBA from the University of Minnesota. Steve also holds a part-time role as Venture Partner for Onset Ventures, a technology venture capital firm based in Menlo Park, CA.
Scott Kokones – Mr. Kokones joined Intelect Medical as co-founder in 2005. He was promoted to VP, Research and Development in 2007 and is leading the development of Intelect's DBS system. Prior to joining Intelect, Mr. Kokones was the Research and Development Manager for Enpath Medical, responsible for the design and development of implantable stimulation leads in the fields of cardiac rhythm management and neuromodulation. Prior to Enpath, Mr. Kokones was employed at Medtronic as a Mechanical Design Engineer where he designed neurostimulation leads, adaptors and accessories for use on peripheral nerve stimulation, spinal cord stimulation and deep brain stimulation. He holds a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan where he graduated with honors.
Juliana Elstad – Ms. Elstad's career has been principally devoted to the medical device fields of neuromodulation and cardiac rhythm management. Prior to Intelect, she was Vice President of Business Development at NDI Medical. In 2008, she founded Elstad Medical, providing business development, marketing, and strategy consulting to early-stage medical device companies. Previously, Ms. Elstad led business development efforts at Medtronic, Inc., evaluating public small-cap companies, privately held startups, joint ventures, and collaborations with major US universities. In addition to her business development role, she coordinated strategic planning, led a cross-functional committee to prioritize Medtronic's neuromodulation R&D efforts, and performed marketing analyses of new therapies, for which she was selected as one of the top 25 Medtronic Emerging Leaders. Prior to Medtronic, Ms. Elstad was a Management Consultant with McKinsey & Company and a Senior Auditor with Arthur Andersen. She received her MBA from the Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania, and her Master’s degree in economics from Moscow State University of International Relations.
Robert L. Purcell III – Mr. Purcell joined Intelect in September of 2005 and serves as the company’s part-time CFO and Treasurer. He has 20 years of experience in accounting and operations management with a variety of medical device and manufacturing companies, including ElectroSonics Medical, Biomec Inc. and Allen Medical Systems. As VP Administration and Finance, and then VP of Operations for Biomec Inc., he helped lead the company through acquisition by Greatbatch (NYSE: GB) in 2007, Mr. Purcell currently serves as President, COO, Secretary and Treasurer of ElectroSonics Medical, a medical device company formed to commercialize certain technology assets of Biomec. Mr. Purcell served in the Ohio Army National Guard as a Material Control and Accounting Specialist and he received his B.A. in Accounting from The University of Akron and his M.B.A. from the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University. Mr. Purcell also serves on the board of several privately held medical device companies.
Keith Carlton – Mr. Carlton joined Intelect Medical as co-founder and Director DBS Program Management in 2005. Mr. Carlton oversees the development of all aspects of Intelect’s DBS system, including its proprietary GUIDE DBS programming system. Prior to joining Intelect, Mr. Carlton was Director of Engineering at Texcel Medical (now Cirtec Medical), an implantable CRMD and Neuromodulation device company. From 1999 - 2004, Mr. Carlton was employed at Medtronic Neurological (formerly MGU) as Sr. Project Engineer/Systems Engineer, where he led the development program for products to deliver InterStim Therapy for urinary incontinence. Keith was a Medtronic Technical Contributor of the Year award recipient in 2001. Mr. Carlton earned his B.S. in Engineering Mechanics and B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University.
